17 January, 2018, Singapore – The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global is set to enter its final year in 2018 on a high note. This comes on the back of growing participation, with last year’s edition seeing 133,000 fans in attendance, the event’s largest turnout during its four years in Singapore.
In 2017, several notable initiatives were also held in conjunction with the WTA Finals. These include matches being streamed for the first time on the newly-launched WTA Live Matches Facebook page, and fringe lifestyle offerings held in conjunction with the WTA Finals like the Backstreet Boys holding their sold-out concert in Singapore. An inaugural WTA Charities Community Day in Singapore was also launched, led by Judy Murray, Community Ambassador of the 2017 WTA Finals and renowned tennis coach and mother to tennis stars Jamie and Andy Murray. These activities collectively helped enhance the vibrancy of the WTA Finals and deepened engagement with the local community.
For 2018’s WTA Finals, audiences can look forward to an equally compelling repertoire of activities that will seek to deepen community and fan participation, as well as deliver a superior match experience to cap off a successful 5-year run in Singapore.
Mr Lionel Yeo, Chief Executive, Singapore Tourism Board, said, “The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global has been a very fruitful event for destination Singapore. It has contributed to Singapore’s existing suite of vibrant lifestyle offerings and helped put us on the tennis world map with good branding benefits. We are also pleased to have enjoyed a successful partnership with WTA. With the support of Lagardère Sports and partners including BNP Paribas and SC Global, we have achieved our objectives of making the WTA Finals one of the most highly anticipated and successful sporting events not just in Singapore but also in the region. We wish to thank our partners and supporters for what has been an incredible journey and look forward to another top-class and memorable Finals in October.”
Mr Lim Teck Yin, Chief Executive Officer of Sport Singapore said, “Having the WTA Finals in Singapore for the last four years has proven to be beneficial in raising the overall profile of the sport of tennis here, as well as inspiring our athletes, youth and community-at-large with a host of global sports role models. As our journey as WTA Finals hosts comes to a close, we would like to thank the WTA for the opportunities to herald a new chapter in tennis development in Singapore and the region, and wish them success in future editions of the Finals.”
Ms Sarah Clements, Vice President, Tennis (Asia) at Lagardère Sports, said, “Lagardère Sports is incredibly proud of the legacy built in the region through the WTA Finals. It has benefited local businesses and communities, inspired thousands of young people in Asia to pick up a racquet, and reinforced Singapore’s status as a leading major event and lifestyle destination. We have grown the stature of the tournament and achieved our goal of turning the Finals into one of the most celebrated tennis festivals on the global sporting calendar. It has been a wonderful journey, and we would like to wish the WTA as well as the next host city every success. We are focused on delivering a spectacular Grand Finale for our fans and partners this October.”
With the five-year contract for hosting the WTA Finals ending in 2018, the Singapore Tourism Board and SportSG evaluated the opportunity of a potential extension and have decided not to pursue this.
