Jelena Ostapenko to Make Debut Appearance at WTA Finals

The Latvian joins Garbiñe Muguruza, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki in the singles field, with only one spot remaining.

ST PETERSBURG, FL, USA – The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) announced today that Jelena Ostapenko has qualified for the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global, set to take place from October 22-29. The Latvian joins Garbiñe Muguruza, Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova, Elina Svitolina, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki in the singles field, with only one spot remaining.

Ostapenko is set to make her debut appearance at the WTA Finals following a breakout season, which saw her win her maiden Grand Slam title at Roland Garros and her career second WTA title at the KEB Hana Bank Incheon Airport Korea Open (Seoul).

“I’m extremely happy to qualify for my very first WTA Finals,” said Ostapenko. “I’ve had a great season and hope I can continue to play my best tennis in front of all the fans in Singapore.”

The 20-year-old’s season is also highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Volvo Car Open (Charleston), a semifinal run at the Dongfeng Motor Wuhan Open and reaching her second major quarterfinal at Wimbledon. Following a third-round run at the US Open, Ostapenko broke into the WTA Top 10 (No.10) on September 11, 2017.

Ostapenko played her first full year on the WTA in 2016, and has since improved her ranking by 76 spots to reach a career-high No.8 (as at October 2, 2017).

Staged at the Singapore Sports Hub from October 22-29, the 2017 BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global is an eight-day tennis festival featuring the world’s best players vying for US$7 million in prize money and two of the most prestigious titles in women’s tennis. The Top 8 singles players will compete in a round-robin format with the winner taking home the Billie Jean King Trophy. The Top 8 doubles teams will compete in a knock-out format for the Martina Navratilova Trophy.

The Porsche Race to Singapore Leaderboard is updated each Monday (every two weeks during Grand Slams events).

The winner of the Porsche Race to Singapore - the player who sits at No.1 on the Race Leaderboard entering the WTA Finals - will not only seal a spot at the season-ending showpiece, but also be congratulated with a new Porsche 911 GTS Cabriolet.
