WTA Future Stars Friday: Chinese-Taipei

WTA Future Stars Friday: A series introducing you to the WTA Future Stars qualifiers. This week, we look at the qualifiers from Chinese-Taipei, Lee Kuan-Yi and Lai Pei-Yu.

Lee Kuan-Yi, Chinese-Taipei’s U14 qualifier for the WTA Future Stars tournament.

Lee Kuan-Yi will be representing Chinese-Taipei in the U14 category of the WTA Future Stars tournament. Lee was born in Kaohsiung and trains at the Hua Tan Tennis Academy. Having finished many tournaments on the podium, some of her notable achievements in 2016 include winning the Nan Ying Cup International Junior Championships and achieving third place at the Hong Kong ITF Junior Tennis Tournament. Lee aspires to become a top professional tennis player and wants to win a Grand Slam!

The WTA Finals team had a Q&A with Lee. Here’s what she said:

Do you have any hobbies?
I like listening to music as it relaxes my body and mind.

Who is your favorite WTA player and why?
My favorite player is Li Na. I think she’s a really great tennis player.

What is your favorite city and why?
My hometown, Kaohsiung, is my favorite city.

How and why did you start to play tennis?
I love any kind of sport. My family members play tennis and my father took me to the court to play when I was a kid.

How do you feel about qualifying for WTA Future Stars and coming to Singapore?
I feel excited and honored that I have the chance to join such a great event.

Lai Pei-Yu

Lai Pei-Yu, Chinese Taipei’s U16 qualifier for the WTA Future Stars tournament.

The participant representing Chinese-Taipei in the U16 category of the WTA Future Stars tournament would be Lai Pei-Yu. Lai currently holds a national ranking of 15 in Hong Kong. She is attending Shin Bei High School, which is also where she trains. Lai was the finalist in the Nationals Grade A singles tournament and was doubles champion in the Grade B tournament. She hopes to get more chances to play at international tournaments and dreams of being ranked Top 100 in ITF.

The WTA Finals team had a Q&A with Lai. Here’s what she said:

What is your hobby?
I like surprise myself and try different types of food. I also like to play games with friends because it helps me enjoy and feel relaxed.

Who is your favorite WTA player and why?
I like Venus Williams because she has really a good serve and powerful groundstrokes. I hope that one day I can become a player like her.

What is your favorite country and why?
Chinese-Taipei because it is my hometown.

How and why did you start to play tennis?
I started playing tennis by joining the tennis group event at school as an exercise.

How do you feel about qualifying for WTA Future Stars and coming to Singapore?
I am very excited to come to Singapore for such an amazing event. Thanks to everyone for giving me a chance to go to Singapore and participate in the WTA Future Stars tournament.
