SVITOLINA & GARCIA THROUGH TO ROUND TWO IN TAIPEI CITY

Top seeds Elina Svitolina and Caroline Garcia had little trouble in their Taiwan Open debuts, both easing through their opening matches in straight sets.

TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan - Top seeds Elina Svitolina and Caroline Garcia had little trouble in their Taiwan Open debuts, both easing through their opening matches in straight sets.

No.1 seed Svitolina had a nearly perfect start against Lucie Hradecka, breaking three times and dropping just three points on her serve throughout the opening set. She faced more fight from the Russian in the second, but she stayed on course and closed out the 6-0, 6-3 victory in just under an hour.

"It was a really great win for me today, I was dominating and this was the goal," Svitolina said in her post-match press conference. "I was feeling really good out there.

"I've been here and practicing a couple of day so the court feels nice. I was really motivated to start well because the crowd was here. I saw they had nice drawings with my name on it - this really motivated me to be focused and play my best.

She'll take on Lucie Hradecka in the second round. The Czech qualifier prevailed in a battle against Kateryna Kozlova, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-1.

No.3 seed Garcia took on qualifier Marina Erakovic in her Taipei City opener.

"It was a good match, you know, it's never easy to start a tournament on a new surface and new conditions," Garcia explained in post-match press. "[Erakovic] was coming from qualifying, she was used to everything, but I think I played a good match."

The Frenchwoman took a late break to edge through in a tense opening set, but once she established her footing she was all business in the second, breaking three times to advance 6-3, 6-2.

"I had some opportunities to get ahead in the first set but I didn't take it, and she was solid on her serve. But I was keeping aggressive and got my rhythm better and better. It's good to be through in two sets."
