TOP SEED SVITOLINA FIGHTS PAST HRADECKA IN TAIPEI CITY

No.1 seed Elina Svitolina made her way to the Taiwan Open quarterfinals after edging past Czech qualifier Lucie Hradecka in a tight straight sets.

TAIPEI CITY, Taiwan - No.1 seed Elina Svitolina fought past Lucie Hradecka to make her way into the Taiwan Open quarterfinals, 6-4, 7-5.

It was a tightly-drawn match from start to finish, marked by long rallies with just one break of serve making the difference in each set.

"It was a solid performance, actually. I was serving really, really well today," Svitolina explained in her post-match press conference. "Of course, I was expecting myself to be a little bit up and down. But in the end, I was very solid.

"Lucie was playing really good so I was trying to wait for my chances, and earn them as well. I think I did pretty good."

Svitolina brought up three break chances right away on the Czech qualifier's first service game, but couldn't convert. She quickly found herself under pressure, having to bat away six break points of her own as Hradecka pounced on her second serves. Svitolina found her chance in the final games to take the lead.

Hradecka stayed solid throughout the second, saving four match points to hold serve for 5-5, but couldn't force the tiebreaker and Svitolina took the match on the second time of asking for a spot in the quarterfinals.

Svitolina, who's been struggling with illness after landing in Taiwan, was thrilled to have kept the match to two sets, despite the tough battle.

"Today's match was two sets, but I was playing for one hour and forty minutes so it was quite long," Svitolina said. "I'm trying not to look so far ahead of the tournament, just focus on my game every match.

"I keep this in my head every day and of course, it's a little bit tough with the flu, but I try to put this aside and not think about it."

Joining Svitolina in the last 16 will be China's Zhu Lin, who came back from a set down to knock out Kurumi Nara 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
